Solace and Justice Studio have launched a new report on Covid-19 lockdown and domestic abuse “When I needed you to protect me, you gave him more power instead.” This report is the result of a collaborative research project between Solace Woman’s Aid and Justice Studio Ltd with assistance from the University of Greenwich.

This toolkit has been produced by Solace in collaboration with Dewis Choice.

For over 40 years, Solace have supported women and children in London to be free from violence and abuse. We provide services for rape crisis, young people, refuge, advocacy, therapy and professional training. In 2019, we began the ‘Visible Women’ project, working closely with the Silver Project (established in 2010) to provide specialist Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse support for older survivors in London.

Last autumn nearly 25% of the referrals into one of our London services were referrals where the survivor and abuser met through a dating app.

One of our frontline workers noticed this and decided to look further into whether we needed to provide additional advice for women when meeting men via dating apps.

This guide was developed by a socio-technical research team at University College London. It covers how internet-connected devices can affect victims of domestic and sexual violence and abuse and is aimed at frontline workers and support services working to support those affected.

A resource list is also available as supplementary material to better inform and guide victims of tech abuse.

In May 2020, Solace set up the Covid-19 Crisis Project to offer safe crisis accommodation with specialist support to women and children fleeing domestic abuse and other forms of violence against women and girls (VAWG), across London during the Covid-19 pandemic. The project was supported by Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) and the Julia and Hans Rausing Trust.
