16 Days of Activism

For 16 Days of Activism 2025, Solace is focusing on the housing barriers survivors face.

Domestic abuse and homelessness are inextricably linked. Survivors tell us that a primary reason for not leaving an abusive partner is the simple but devastating question: Where will I go?

Half of the survivors we support told us they were asked to meet pre-application requirements before they could get housing help, including proving abuse or homelessness, or showing local ties to the area. Others said that housing services said they must continue to live with their perpetrator to avoid being classed as ‘intentionally homeless’ and therefore ineligible for housing support.

“I felt like we were just a case or a number to the housing advisers, not actual people and children.” – Survivor

Red tape should never endanger someone. Solace is committed to driving real systemic change so no one is left in danger because of barriers within the housing system. We are working with housing specialists to create a safer, more supportive process for survivors.
