Could you be a part of our diverse, inspiring, vibrant and motivated team making a positive contribution to rebuilding the lives of women and children? At Solace we provide excellent volunteer opportunities to be a part of a leading domestic and sexual violence charity in London, which offers a great range of benefits. Volunteers can get involved in our specialist services from working directly with survivors to playing key roles in our central support services. Volunteering is a fantastic way to gain skills and working experience, and there is lots of training on offer so you can learn and develop. So stand with us and volunteer to help create safe lives and strong futures in our community.
How do you become a volunteer with Solace?
Any new volunteering position will be advertised below. You need to complete an application form identifying skills you have that you might bring to the role and a personal statement. The personal statement is a chance for you to talk about why you would like to volunteer with us, why you think you would be a good fit for the role and any experience you have from relevant work (paid or unpaid).
The team that is recruiting a volunteer will then draw up a shortlist and call those applicants to interview. After the interviews, we will let you know either way and offer feedback to everyone who interviewed. When you accept a volunteering position, we will then onboard you into Solace, which involves providing two references, doing a DBS check, and attending induction training. The training will give you an overview of the work Solace undertakes and an introduction to VAWG (Violence Against Women and Girls).
Frequently asked questions about what volunteering involves and what you can expect
What is the expected time commitment?
The time commitment will depend on the role you are applying for, but we hope all volunteers will stay with us for at least 6-months in order to get the most out of their role. We ask all volunteers to commit to volunteering regularly so there’s continuity for the women and children we support.
What training will I receive?
You will receive a comprehensive induction training when you start, which will welcome you to Solace and equip you with all you need to know to in order to volunteer. You will be provided with all the basic training such as safeguarding, data protection, health and safety, and equality, diversity and inclusion.
You will also receive training specific to your role, which will be delivered on site with your new team.
On top of this, you be able to access a range of optional training, such as CPD accredited courses, that will help you develop your skills.
What support will I receive?
All volunteers at Solace will have a dedicated supervisor who will schedule regular catch ups and supervisions, to ensure you’re getting the most out of your role. You will also be supported by the Volunteer Coordinator, who will keep you updated with opportunities and all the information you need to know. Volunteers are valued across Solace, and we all want to help see them succeed!
Can I claim expenses?
We don’t want anyone to be out of pocket when they’re already donating their valuable time, so we provide expenses to make sure nothing stands in your way. These expenses cover all reasonable travel and food costs in line with our expense policy.
Frequently asked questions about who can volunteer
I have lived experience of domestic abuse, can I apply?
We recognise the expertise and perspective that women with lived experience bring to their volunteering roles. We also recognise the potential for re-traumatisation that may occur whilst volunteering. We will therefore consider each volunteer opportunity on a case by case basis, with a focus on the suitability of that individual for that specific role. Suitability for the role will be determined by the Service Manager at the point of interview and will not be solely based on the length of time elapsed since receiving a service. Women cannot volunteer for a service in the same borough as where they received Solace services.
I’m under 16, can I apply?
Unfortunately, we are not able to accept applicants under 16.
Do you support visa applications?
Unfortunately, we are not able to support visa applications for those wishing to come to the UK to volunteer.
Can I volunteer with Solace whilst claiming benefits?
You can volunteer while receiving benefits, as long as you continue to meet all the conditions of the benefit you get.
I’m looking for a student placement as part of my studies. Can I volunteer as a way of doing this?
Student placements that are mandatory do not fall under volunteering. We may be able to support you, but this will be on a case-by-case basis.
Can I apply to volunteer as a refugee/asylum seeker?
Absolutely, we welcome anyone who can meet the screening steps for the role they are applying for, including disclosure (DBS) and reference checks.
I have a disability/support needs. Can I still volunteer?
At Solace we are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment for our volunteers. The Service Users we support come from all backgrounds and we want to reflect that in our volunteering team. We are happy to consider any adjustments you might need to support you in your role. If you would like to discuss this further with the volunteer team, please contact us at volunteering@solacewomensaid.org. This will not affect your application.
My employer has given me time off to help a charity of my choice. Can I volunteer for a few days?
Due to the sensitive and confidential nature of the work that we do, and the extensive training that we provide, we cannot offer short term volunteering opportunities.
I have a criminal record, can I still volunteer?
Having a criminal record will not automatically exclude you from volunteering with us. We will take into account the nature of the offences and the role applied for. We would encourage you to discuss this with the volunteer supervisor during your interview.
