Nia’s story
When Nia* arrived at Solace refuge, she had just escaped a long-term abusive relationship.
For years, she endured physical violence, coercive control, emotional and sexual abuse. Nia had become estranged from her friends and family and lived in constant fear for her and her children’s safety.
Following police intervention and a safeguarding referral, Nia and her children were relocated to a Solace refuge. From the moment they arrived, Solace’s team worked closely with Nia to help her find the strength to heal.
Solace helped Nia enroll her children in schools near the refuge and began trauma-focused therapy through Solace’s in-house counselling service. Nia attended empowerment workshops and completed a Domestic Abuse Awareness course, aimed at helping survivors recognise early signs of abuse.
Solace’s advocacy team supported Nia with complex housing applications, liaised with local authorities, and ensured she received the financial and legal protections she was entitled to. An injunction is now in place, and her former partner is under investigation.
Over time, Nia’s confidence has blossomed. She reconnected with her extended family and rediscovered personal joys like dancing, something she once loved but had given up.
Today, Nia continues to receive ongoing support from her Solace caseworker as she prepares to move into her new home.
