Solace launches Shadow Board

Solace has launched its Shadow Board, a group of survivors who help inform and advise the charity’s work. Here, Shadow Board Chair Alexia Cheneau introduces this amazing asset to Solace’s work.

The Shadow Board is a fantastic group of passionate and determined women who have come together with a shared mission: to advocate for and fight against violence against women and girls (VAWG). Each of our members brings lived experience, insights and a powerful commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of women who have faced domestic abuse or sexual violence – or both, as is too often the case. Our collective strength lies in our diversity, resilience and focus on supporting victim-survivors through every stage of their journey. We act as a critical advisory group to Solace and offer informed recommendations and strategic guidance to Solace’s Board of Trustees. Through regular engagement and consultation, we ensure that the voices and experiences of women affected by domestic abuse are heard, respected, and integrated into decision-making processes at the highest level of the organisation.

Our input influences the services offered and helps identify gaps or barriers in the current support systems. What we ultimately aim to achieve is a more responsive, survivor-centred approach across all areas of Solace’s work. By working closely with the rest of the organisation’s teams, we play a vital role in enhancing the support structures that victim-survivors rely on, whether it’s access to emergency accommodation, counselling services or long-term support. The purpose behind the Shadow Board’s work is clear and rooted in justice and compassion: we help ensure that every woman who reaches out to Solace receives the best possible outcome. This means not only helping them to come to safety, but also empowering them to rebuild their life on their own terms.

The work of the Shadow Board increases the helps services be tailored and effective in addressing the complex needs of women who have experienced violence and abuse. Our advocacy helps create an environment where survivors are believed and supported. In doing so, we are not just influencing the way Solace operates, but we are actively shaping a future where more women are able to escape abuse, access the support they need and reclaim their lives with dignity and strength. Our work demonstrates the power of survivor-led change and the importance of ensuring that those most affected by gender-based violence have a voice in shaping solutions.
