Preparing to leave: Packing an emergency bag

We understand how difficult it can be to make the decision to leave an abuser. If you’re thinking about taking that step, having a bag packed with essential items can help ensure you are able to stay safe and supported.

To begin with, make sure your bag is packed and ready to go whenever you need it. Keep it in a safe place where the abuser won’t be able to access it. This might mean leaving it with a trusted friend or family member.

Here are some important things to include:

  • Keys – this could include house keys, car keys, or work keys, so you can still access important places if needed.
  • Cash and cards – to help maintain some financial stability.
  • ID – such as a passport, driving licence, or birth certificate. These are essential if you need to access housing or financial support.
  • Prescription medications
  • Favourite comfort items – if you have children, this might include a favourite cuddly toy to provide emotional support.
  • Clothes and toiletries
  • Your mobile phone and a charger
  • Important documents or legal paperwork – such as a tenancy agreement, financial records or education certificates.
