What is your role with Solace?
I joined in 2019 and volunteer on the Rape Crisis Helpline.
What do you enjoy about your role?
I enjoy giving back to society and helping others. People are scared of speaking about domestic abuse and they do not want to normalise the fact they have been sexually abused. As a volunteer, I give them the chance to speak up and find out that they can speak up without being scared and that they will be believed and that there is nothing wrong with them and they don’t need to feel guilty. We can show them to learn how to respect themselves and set boundaries for themselves.
Can you tell me about one of the most memorable days/experiences you have had?
A lot of people I speak to have experienced historic rape and didn’t speak up about it when it happened so are carrying extra weight and need emotional support. One woman I supported on the helpline was raped when she was young and although she received support from her family, she experienced complex PTSD. I supported her and she can self regulate better and understand the triggers. She wanted to give back to Solace to thank us for the support so she signed up as a volunteer.

If you had one wish for women and girls for the next 50 years, what would you ask for?
To not have to worry about being assaulted or of any kind of violence. Not having to look back when walking home at night.
