Holly’s story

Holly* had been in a relationship with her husband since she was a teenager, and violence was present from the very beginning.

Over time, the abuse took a heavy toll on Holly’s physical and mental health. She was frequently unwell and did not understand that her symptoms were a result of the trauma she endured. While Holly did what she could to keep her four children safe, but feelings of isolation made it difficult for her to seek help.

One day, after her husband carried out a violent assault on Holly in public, a bystander called the police. An officer referred Holly to Solace, and she was supported to move into a refuge with her children. For the first time, Holly had a sense of stability.

A few years later, when her ex-partner began threatening her again and Holly faced eviction from temporary housing, she reconnected with Solace for further support.

Holly’s caseworker met her regularly in a safe, familiar setting and helped her manage housing issues. Together, they navigated complex rent arrears and relocation challenges until the council agreed to offer Holly and her children a secure tenancy. With the support of her caseworker, Holly found a safe, new home and a new beginning for her and her children.

Now, Holly and her children are settled and thriving. Holly is supported by ongoing counselling set up for her by Solace and has made connections within her local community. Holly describes her life now as peaceful, stable and free from fear.

*Holly’s name has been changed to protect her identity.

“You’re not alone and there is help out there. Your brain may be telling you no one understands, nothing will change, and no one can help but that’s not true… Solace can.” – Holly
