Joanna, Solace Volunteer

I have done a mixture of volunteer roles with Solace. I started on the Barnet Advice and Support and then joined then joined the Arise project for 12 weeks to support with delivering the sessions to groups. I helped service users to understand how to get out of their abusive situation. I learnt a lot and it was amazing to find out what service users were/are going through. We supported them with being able to understand and recognise signs of abuse, what to do if children are involved, the help that is available and how to manage relationships. I am currently a Trauma Informed Practise Volunteer.

When I volunteered for the Arise project, I loved supporting service users and the fact that Solace is deliberate and intentional in their process to help service users become more empowered with the right information to help themselves mentally and otherwise. I am able to use my lived experience to support the service users as I can understand and identify what they were/are going through. I also want them to see that I had these experiences and look at where I am now – it gives other service users hope. I am able to give back my best as I am in a better place in every aspect of my life now.

One of them is when I had a one on one performance appraisal with my supervisor. I got feedback from her that was very heartwarming and it gave me a boost to know that my work was recognised by Solace. The impact you are making is helping people survive and gives real results. She gave me both my strengths and areas of improvement which was very fulfilling for me.

It fills me with pride that service users are getting value from my work and has given me confidence that I have been able to pass onto service users to believe in themselves.

My wish would be that Solace can continue to do the good work they do and help more women get out of abusive relationships.
