Leaving home for University: Am I experiencing domestic abuse?

Starting university? It’s an exciting new chapter, full of opportunities, independence, and new connections. But during this time of change, it’s also important to be aware of what an unhealthy relationship can look like.

More than 185,000 people in UK universities experience domestic abuse annually. Young people aged between 16-24 are among those most at risk of experiencing domestic abuse.

Domestic abuse is not always obvious. It can involve a single incident or an ongoing pattern of behaviour that’s controlling, manipulative, threatening, degrading or violent.

If you’re unsure about your situation, you can take our quiz to help you better understand what you might be going through.

Throughout this quiz, we refer to “your partner,” but please know that abuse can happen in any close relationship — including those with family members, ‘situationships’ or carers.

If you answer “yes” to one or more of the following questions, this could be a sign that you’re experiencing abuse. Even answering “yes” once is enough to seek support. Everyone’s experience is different, and this quiz isn’t exhaustive. If something feels wrong, trust your instincts.

You’re not alone. If you’re feeling unsure or unsafe, reach out to Solace. We’re here to listen and support you.
