Solace, a leading UK charity specialising in support for women and children experiencing domestic abuse and sexual violence, has announced today that it will no longer be active on X (formerly Twitter). This decision reflects growing concerns about the platform’s ability to provide a safe and supportive environment for women, survivors of violence and abuse, those working in the sector and beyond. Solace is committed to ensuring that survivors, including current and potential service users, engaging with their social media feel reassured that its services remain safe, inclusive, and psychologically informed.
Over the last two years, the rate of malicious and abusive comments and messages to the Solace X account has increased, and in recent months has proliferated. Many are too violent to repeat, but they include:
‘You are a waste of space.’
‘Sincerely, f**k you.’
‘Please change your name and live forever in shame. #SexMatters’
Nahar Choudhury, CEO of Solace, said:
“Our staff and volunteers work tirelessly to support people navigating complex and traumatic experiences in a challenging environment. It is unacceptable for them to face bullying and threats online as part of their work. For the foreseeable future, we will no longer engage on X and instead encourage our supporters to connect with us on our other social media platforms.”
“At Solace, we stand for inclusion, compassion, and safety – values we extend to everyone who uses our services, our staff and volunteers. Unfortunately, X no longer aligns with these principles. While we are saddened to leave a space where we’ve provided support to many women and survivors, this decision is a stand against the toxicity we have witnessed growing in recent years.”
This move follows similar decisions by organisations like The Guardian and other charities, which have chosen to prioritise platforms that better align with their mission and values. Whilst all social media platforms must continue to work to protect women and young people from harm and abuse, Solace will now focus on growing its presence on other social media networks, including Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok and Bluesky, to maintain connections with its community.
During 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Solace is reaffirming our commitment to survivors and advocates everywhere. Solace will continue to provide support, raise awareness, and campaign for change across multiple platforms.
“We are still here for survivors, and we hope you’ll follow our work in creating a safer, more equitable world”added Choudhury.
The Solace X account will remain open with signposting for support services and other social media accounts for the time being, but no further posts will be made.
