Throughout Black History Month we’ve be highlighting the work of amazing charities and organisations that work with Black and Minority Ethnic women and children. Many we are lucky to partner with in our work and others have been nominated by our staff team here at Solace. Here is a roundup of these organisations!
Southall Black Sisters
Established to meet the needs of Black (Asian & African-Caribbean) women, Southall Black Sisters have been at the forefront of challenging domestic & gender-related violence for over 40yrs. We’re proud to work in partnership with this incredible organisation. https://southallblacksisters.org.uk/
Sistah Space
They work with women and girls of African heritage that have experienced gender-based violence or have lost a loved one to domestic abuse. They provide advice and support as well as practical help by providing hygiene products and other essential items. https://www.sistahspace.org/
Black Pride UK
An annual celebration where black and minority LGBTQ+ people can celebrate themselves during pride month as well as having several events throughout the year. https://www.ukblackpride.org.uk/
IKWRO
Focuses on Asian women and girls at risk of honour killings but also has a support system for black women. They offer advice, counselling and training for women and has IKWRO women’ s refuge for Middle Eastern, North African and Afghan women. The refuge provides safe accommodation and specialist support to single women at risk of “honour” based violence, forced marriage, FGM and domestic abuse. http://ikwro.org.uk
The Damilola Taylor Trust
The Damilola Taylor Trust was set up in memory of Damilola Taylor who was activist of knife crime 20 years ago at the age of 10. The charity aims to provide young people with the opportunities to play learn and live their lives free of fear and violence. https://www.damilolataylortrust.co.uk/
Mama Health & poverty partnership
Bringing together specialist services for Black women by Black/African women and girls to change their experiences and address health inequalities and poverty. Their work tackle harmful traditional practices Including female genital Mutilation, Breast ironing, Child Marriages and domestic servitude etc. https://mhapp.org.uk/
Ashiana
Specialises in helping Black and Minority Ethnic women, in particular, women from South Asian, Turkish & Iranian communities, aged 16-30 years who are at risk of domestic violence and sexual violence. https://www.ashiana.org.uk/
IMECE
IMECE Women’s Centre stands against all forms of violence against women and girls. They support and empower Turkish, Kurdish and Cypriot Turkish women and Black, Asian, minority ethnic, refugee (BAMER) and migrant women to improve the quality of their lives. https://imece.org.uk/about-us/
ACLT charity
With not many black/ mixed race people signing up to the donation register the charity is committed to helping provide blood and organs as they believe no one should die waiting. https://aclt.org/
Charity So White
Their call to action is simple: have candid and critical conversations about racism, rooted in honesty, humility and hope; publicly acknowledge that institutional racism exists in their organisations; prioritise anti-racist work, embedding it into whatever institutional mechanisms are at their disposal and dismantling the ones that are preventing change.

The Reach out project
A community interest company that provides mentoring to young boys in South London as well as opportunities and experiences in reward of good behaviour i.e taking them to football matches and concerts as well as setting them up on work experience supported by Ian Wright and Stormzy.

Decolonising Contraception

The Black Thrive Partnership
Black Thrive is a partnership between communities, statutory organisations, voluntary and private sector. They work together to reduce the inequality and injustices experienced by Black people in mental health services. They address the barriers which lead to poorer outcomes across a range of social factors, such as education, employment, housing, and so on, all of which may negatively impact one’s health and wellbeing. The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust
Inspiring and supporting young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to create a fairer society in which everyone can succeed. The founder, Stephen, who would have been 46 this year, was murdered in a racist attack. The landmark case exposed racism within the Police and beyond.
Abuela Doulas
Mars Lord an advocate for black women during their pregnancy- has raised raised awareness of the massive discrepancy in maternal mortality amongst women of colour compared to white women and champions black birth supporters such as doulas.
Home Girls Unite
Home Girls Unite is a support group for the eldest immigrant daughters.
Sari Charity
Located in Bristol, provides support for victims of any hate crime including race, faith, transphobic etc.
Asian Women’s Centre
A voluntary organisation that provides services to women who have, or who currently are experiencing domestic abuse.
